Why bail-out the auto industry?

Why bail out the Canadian auto industry if it keeps on producing gas-guzzling dinosaurs for which there is no longer a demand?

The bailout makes sense only if the automakers are willing to switch to energy-efficient small cars or electric vehicles, produced at a competitive price.

Instead, why not bail out the high-tech industry? In spite of all its problems, Nortel is still the largest R&D spender in Canada; it employs thousands of our best and brightest minds. Surely, the government can give more R&D projects to this sector, to help it through the current recession. This will also help keep our talent here.

As  recently pointed out, large parts of Southern Ontario, near the United States border, are economically depressed after recent factory closures. These areas are well suited for production of wind energy, perhaps with the help of a stimulus package from the government. Hundreds of windmills are already sprouting up on the U.S. side of the border, lured by last summer’s high gas prices and by generous state subsidies. On the Canadian side, there is a windmill project on Wolfe Island but there is, no doubt, plenty of scope for many more.

Why bail out anyone. I do not have that great house, I do not even have two bathrooms, or oak cupboards in my kitchen or a swimming pool, I drive a 94 but as long as it starts it is mine, I do not even have high speed internet or a pentium four BUT you will not have to bail me out…..BUT I DO NOT WANT TO BAIL YOU OUT EITHER, WHAT ABOUT THERE ARE GOOD TIMES AND BAD TIMES AND NOT TO SPEND ABOVE YOUR MEANS I GREW UP IN THE 60′S WHEN WE WERE ALL HAPPY TO HAVE A PAIR OF JEANS, THAT IS ONE PAIR……..TIME TO SUCK IT UP TURN OFF YOUR IPODS . YOU GOT YOURSSELF INTO THIS NOW YOU GET YOURSELF OUT. NO DOUBT YOU JUST PURCHASED ONE OF THOSE MACHINES TO GIVE YOU THE ROUTE TO DRIVE….I HAVE A MAP….

I am opposed to the auto industry bailout … these companies are being rewarded for poor business choices and a lack of common sense … it is kind of like saying let’s bailout the manufacturers of Beta VCR’s in the 90’s …

In fact I think the bailout money is basically going to end up being a social services payment, the only disturbing part is that it will not have a cap on it for the exec’s … we will continue to give them there high salaries while the workers make the bigger sacrifices …

Why not use this money to make grants to someone with a new business model that is sutainable in transportation, like a green car manufacturer, or improve green transportation infrastructure … it irks me that tax money is being used to essentially pollute the earth when it is not necessary with existing technology
